Standing at a height of 1930 m, Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka. It gets its name from a temple dedicated to the great saint Mulappa swamy who is believed to have meditated at the caves near the summit. The caves are accessible but now they have been blocked and not open for tourists. It is a serene place and very apt for trekking. There are many interesting trekking trails from Sarpadaari to the Mullayangiri peak and is an exceptional spot for adventure enthusiasts.
Mullayangiri Peak
There is a small temple at the top of the peak dedicated to Lord Siva and Parvathi. Standing atop the peak I felt as if I reached Kailasa. The road to the top is narrow and it’s difficult for 2 vehicles to travel at the same time. The road is maintained poorly and the drive is horrible. Side rails are not provided and the steep drop frightens you. I had a difficult time keeping my cool while my husband steered our car perfectly through the imperfect roads. The last stretch of 1 km to the top was just a muddy trail. Jeeps were going through that way with utmost ease but I was not ready to give in for that adventure. So we parked our car and climbed to the top.

Till that time I was tensed and had sweated profusely. But when we started climbing I started feeling oddly relaxed. The cool breeze and green mountains took my breath away. We couldn't enjoy the view for a long time as the air became chilly and my teeth started chattering. I felt a strange inner peace as I viewed the place. The view of the valley is breathtaking. After all, the tension and fear had become worthwhile. The descent from the hill was easier and soon we reached the bottom of the hill. Remember to carry an umbrella if you happen to visit during the rainy days otherwise be prepared to get drenched from head to toe.
